Principal’s Message
Marist College Eastwood is a community that honours the individual strengths and talents of each young person while nurturing their capacity to work collaboratively and purposefully. We strive to prepare our students to take their place in the world beyond the gates of the College as confident, capable and compassionate young men. As Principal, it is both a privilege and an exciting responsibility to continue leading this strong community forward and shaping its vision for the future.
Our vision, a Daring Faith, a Dynamic Education Developing Strong Minds and Gentle Hearts, sits at the heart of all that we do. With students at the centre of our work, our dedicated staff strive to cultivate a safe and supportive environment where young men are encouraged to challenge themselves, pursue excellence and commit to continual improvement. We value our strong partnerships with families and recognise that working together is essential in achieving the best possible outcomes for our students. We remain deeply committed to ensuring that every student is known, supported and challenged to grow academically, socially and spiritually.
Our Marist spirituality permeates throughout everything we do at Marist College Eastwood. It is underpinned by the five Marist characteristics that are common to all Marist ministries: Simplicity, Love of Work, Presence, Family Spirit and in the Way of Mary.
Through the presence of Mary as our model of faith, we strive to form young men who live lives of compassion, humility and service. In the spirit of St Marcellin Champagnat, we educate in a way that values simplicity (to hide nothing and pretend nothing), family spirit (to know love deeply and abidingly), presence (welcoming, authentic and attentive) and love of work, ensuring that faith is lived authentically through action, relationships and service to others.
It is our priority to build upon the longstanding traditions and excellent academic culture for which Marist College Eastwood is renowned. We are an exceptional learning community where every learner has a place, talents are recognised and nurtured, and high expectations are balanced with joy, hope and care.
Our College motto, Respice Finem “Begin with the end in mind” is a powerful call for our times. It challenges our students to live with purpose, to prepare themselves as strong, courageous and empathetic leaders, and to be people of influence and compassion within their local and global communities.
An education at Marist College Eastwood is one that is deeply connected to the world our students inhabit. As a community, we continue to create meaningful opportunities, partnerships and experiences that develop our young men in all aspects of their lives, preparing them not only for life, but for success and significance.

History
Marist College Eastwood has been educating young men in the Marist tradition since 1937. Brother Leopold Smith and three other Marist Brothers – Ervan McDonough, Loyola Sullivan and Kenneth Harris came to Eastwood and opened St Kevin’s Boys School, as the college was originally named. On the first day, they taught 107 students in Eastwood House which was built in 1863 and which housed the original four classrooms. Today, Eastwood House serves as the college’s administration building, the site has significantly expanded and the College has an enrollment of over 900 students.
The Marist Brothers themselves were founded by St Marcellin Champagnat in 1817, a priest who began his ministry in La Valla, France. He had a special love for the poor and underprivileged which encouraged him to establish the Little Brothers of Mary, later to become known as the Institute of the Marist Brothers. Today, Marist College Eastwood continues to share the privilege and responsibility of nurturing “Good Christians and Good Citizens.” Today the charism is expressed in our commitment to the following Marist pillars and ideals:
- Presence – By establishing positive relationships with all members of the community, founded on love, openness and hospitality.
- Family Spirit – Our family spirit’s foundation is the love that Jesus has for all, this pillar convicts us to stand in solidarity with each other and build a sense of community.
- Simplicity – We strive to be people of integrity and humility as we seek out God’s call for our lives and our true self.
- Love of Work – We seek to work collaboratively, resiliently and joyfully, to be generous with our gifts and to do good quietly.
- In the Way of Mary – Mary is the perfect model of discipleship who is constantly guiding us to her Son Jesus. She offers us an example of faith, strength in gentleness and courage.
Mission
Our apostolic mission, illuminated by our founder St Marcellin Champagnat, calls us to nurture Good ‘Christians and Good Citizens’. In partnership with parents and the wider community, the college aims to develop, A Daring Faith, a Dynamic Education Developing Strong Minds and Gentle Hearts.
With students at the centre of all we do, Marist College Eastwood seeks to nurture students towards full humanity, embracing individual gifts and talents and points of challenge and growth, supported by their community.
Motto
The words Respice Finem are firmly embedded in our college history and hold as much value for us today as when our founding Marist Brothers became inspired to attach it to the college. The most authoritative sources translate Respice Finem as “Look to the end”. The motto emphasises recognising the purpose for all the endeavours we undertake and challenges us to allow this purpose to inform our actions. In looking to the end, one can be motivated to set high expectations and their sights on aspirational goals. In addition, it reminds us of our humanity in light of the impermanence of worldly things, as well as our mortality, inviting us to develop virtue in seeking the transcendental. This is reflected in our pursuit of truth, goodness, beauty and of course God – a morality expounded on equally by the Prophet Amos who states “Seek [God] and live” (5:4) and St Augustine, “For what other end do we have, if not to reach the Kingdom of which has no end…there we shall rest, love and praise” (cf. CCC 1720). Our motto strongly affirms that we can be the person we hope to become in the present moment and that we can realise our vision, each day and through each encounter.
The college seeks to promote and nurture its relationship with our local parishes and broader Catholic community. Marist College enjoys relationships with parishes from across the Archdiocese of Sydney, particularly the Northern Deanery; as well as parishes in the Diocese of Parramatta and Broken Bay.
